Suspension of Social Media During Muharram in Pakistan
The Government of Pakistan has suspended plans to temporarily suspend social media applications nationwide.
A directive was issued to the Ministry of Interior Affairs to halt the operation of all social media platforms, including WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube, throughout the province of Punjab.
This action was motivated by anticipated sectarian tensions during the sacred month of Muharram, necessitating measures to uphold peace within the region.
In a recent development, The Ministry of Interior Affairs has reportedly revoked the notification regarding the suspension of social media services.
On July 4th of 2024, following a decision made during a meeting of the standing committee of the cabinet, the Punjab provincial government has dismissed the instructions of suspension of social media services from the 6th to the 11th of Muharram 2024.
