Retired, in Attire Again: The Appointment of Adhoc Judges has been Approved
The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) approved the appointment of Justice (retd) Sardar Tariq Masood and Justice (retd) Mazhar Miankhel as ad-hoc judges to the Supreme Court during its session on Friday.
Justice Tariq Masood’s appointment received an 8-1 ratio approval, with dissent from Justice Muneeb Akhtar, while Justice Mazhar Miankhel’s appointment was approved with a 6-3 ratio.
Both judges have been contracted to serve on the bench for a period of one year.
Justice Mazhar Alam retired from the Supreme Court on August 21, 2021; Justice Baqar, who previously served as Sindh chief minister during a caretaker setup, retired on April 4, 2022; Justice Miankhel retired on July 13, 2022; and Justice Masood retired on March 10, 2024.
Opposition parties have expressed disapproval of these contractual appointments, citing concerns over legal violations. Government officials, however, have defended the appointments as lawful, citing precedents from previous administrations.
These appointments were made following a Supreme Court decision to fill reserved seats. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf opposes the appointment of ad-hoc judges, fearing potential bias in their rulings.
